Poly. Students Threaten Disruption of Meeting Over School Closure

Polytechnic students issued a warning threatening to stage a protest to disrupt the ongoing national confab in Abuja next week Wednesday over months of closure of their schools. They plan to gather in their Hundreds including lecturers from polytechnics and colleges of education to carry this out.

Though controlled by heavily armed policemen, the spokesman for NAPS expressed the anger of the students present at the protest. “We are supporting our lecturers because they are fighting for our own rights and those of all polytechnics in the country,” said Abdulmajeed Oyeniyi, spokesman for National Association of Polytechnic Students. “We want to send information to people that are not here today. By next week Wednesday we are stopping the confab in Abuja again,” said Oyeniyi.

On Friday morning, a bus filled with polytechnic students from Anambra, Adamawa, Kogi and Niger, blocked traffic at Federal Secretariat junction in central Abuja demanding the sack of education minister Nyesom Wike, insisting on placards that he was “weak” and “not competent.” while calling on federal government to meet their demands and targets.

Check out footballer Dani Alves' incredible response to racism

Barcelona full-back Dani Alves produced the perfect riposte to a racist taunt when taking a corner kick during his team's 3-2 win at Villareal on Sunday.
The Brazil international casually picked up a banana thrown from the terraces onto the pitch, peeled it and shoved it in his mouth in one fluid motion before tossing away the peel and completing the kick.
Alves has previously taken a stand against racism at stadia in Spain.
The 30-year-old complained of racial abuse last year after being taunted by monkey chants from sections of the crowd during a Copa del Rey semi-final at Real Madrid and labelled Spain's efforts to tackle the problem a "lost war".
European football has long been blighted by racist incidents by fans and their leagues have been criticised for not doing enough to stamp them out.

Woman kills her own new born child because he looked like her ex-boyfriend

18-year-old Ana Rosa Mora (pictured above) has been arrested for killing her own child because the the new born looked like her ex-boyfriend. Ana wrapped her baby in a bag and left him outside to die because she feared the child looked like her ex-boyfriend and her current boyfriend would leave her.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the teen gave birth last weekend and attended school on Monday after allegedly committing the act and even showed staff members pictures of a newborn girl that she claimed she downloaded from the Internet.

But after employees noticed strange behavior - such as the girl asking if authorities could link her to the child through DNA and lying about the baby's age - they alerted authorities.

The child had been found by a construction worker a few hours after the child was left outside. The boy was born alive but died of asphyxia and possible exposure, authorities said.

The new mother said her ex-boyfriend was the father and when the child was born she feared her current boyfriend would notice and leave her, the newspaper reported. She was arrested Friday April 25th.

Mora, who was scheduled to graduate from high school in June and attend college in the fall is facing charges of first-degree murder and is now being held on $500,000 bail.

Kogi Polytechnic Shut Down Over Lecturer’s Murder During Ebira And Igala Clash

The management of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja has closed down the institution indefinitely following the killing of a senior lecturer, Mr Nathaniel Abimaje by some students during an clash between students of the main ethnic groups in the state.
Mr Abimaje said to be a senior lecturer was allegedly stabbed to death by his students when trying to settle a dispute amongst them. The dispute allegedly degenerated from a clash between two females of the Ebira and Igala tribes.
The Polytechnic has been shut down indefinitely and students were asked to vacate their hostels as security operatives now patrol the institution.
The management of the school stated that the institution was shut down to prevent the crisis from degenerating.
Ethnic Clash
A correspondent in Lokoja who visited the institution reports that the lecturer was said to have been stabbed to death by some group of students while he tried to mediate in the crisis that involved two ethnic groups in the Polytechnic.
The Kogi State Polytechnic which has been peaceful since its establishment, recently recorded some conflict between students from the two major ethnic groups in the state; Ebira and Igala.
It was gathered that the tribal groups have been at logger heads over a crisis that involved two female students of the institution, since March.
The crisis that led to killing of the lecturer was said to have started at about 9pm in the night between the Ebira students and Igala students.
The fracas led students to take to their heels while some were wounded during the calamity.
Some students were lucky to have immediately left the institution with their belongings while some others were not lucky as they were not allowed into the dormitories by security operatives  following the school’s closure.
The Rector of the Polytechnic, Professor Mathew Ajibero who spoke to Channels TV in Lokoja, said the initial crisis between the two females was resolved, but he could not explain what caused the fresh crisis, stating that the institution will investigate the issue.
While some students were already leaving for their homes, some were still waiting outside the school to get their properties out of the dormitories.
The students refused to speak to Channels TV out of fear that they might either been expelled or attacked.
Eventually, a student of the polytechnic who spoke to us blamed the school’s management for failing to manage the crisis well before it degenerated into manslaughter.

Nigerian leaders unite against Boko Haram

Leaders from across Nigeria appealed for a united front against Boko Haram on Thursday, saying the Islamist insurgents were waging war on Christian and Muslim Nigerians alike.

President Goodluck Jonathan held a security meeting with governors of 36 states straddling Nigeria's largely Christian south and mostly Muslim north to seek ways of ending the Islamists' five-year-old insurgency.

"We agreed that the Boko Haram war is not a religious war and therefore it's a war against all Nigerians and should be treated as such," a statement said after the meeting.

The insurgents abducted 230 schoolgirls on April 14 and most are still missing. On the same day, a bomb in a bus station on the edge of the capital Abuja killed 75 people, an attack for which Boko Haram claimed responsibility.

The two attacks showed the inability of the Nigerian security forces to protect civilians against Boko Haram, seen as the biggest security threat to Africa's top oil producer.

The insurgency by the group, whose name means "Western education is sinful" in the northern Hausa language, has killed thousands in the past two years.

Officials have long feared that Boko Haram, which wants to carve a breakaway Islamic state out of Nigeria, will harden religious divisions.

But while the group has repeatedly targeted Christians - blowing up churches or killing minority Christian ethnic groups in the north - the majority of their victims have been Muslims. The Islamists destroy churches, but also mosques.

"Both Muslims and Christians are being killed. Boko Haram doesn't discriminate against any person," Theodor Orji, governor of the southern Abia state, said after the emergency meeting.

"Boko Haram is not a religious war and people should not misrepresent it to be," Orji said.

Heightened Boko Haram attacks coincide with rising communal violence in the Middle Belt, where north and south meet, that has killed hundreds. Officials fear the Islamist insurgency will merge with this so far distinct conflict.

The military said on Thursday it had arrested gunmen who killed 40 people in two attacks on villagers in the east in the past week and they had confessed to being Boko Haram militants. The attack initially looked like Muslim Fulani herdsmen attacking ethnic Tiv Christian farmers.

Why I Think The Alder Social Media Report Weighs More Than The Africa Practice Landscape by @biddy_09

I decided to comment on a document i received recently which is the Africa Practice Social Media Landscape - a document that attempts to identify the top social media users whether they be brands or individuals -and the Alder report for brands. This came about because i received the request via an email from my boss. I thought it would be interesting so i've decided to share my thoughts.

Enjoy!

The Alder Social Media Report (Top Rated Social Media Brands) ranks social media users across all platforms without homing in on a single platform. The report attempts to give a concise round-off of an entity's social media endeavours through providing a top-three ranking based on several criteria. That is, social media professionals and savvy internet users - who made up the panel of judges - presented their top
candidates based on the candidate's influence on his/her chosen social media platform.

In contrast, the Africa Practice Social Media Landscape presents top influencers on a specific social media platform - Twitter - and then presents a ranking of blogging sites by using Alexa - a web analytics company - data.
Also, it provides a comparison between a traditional journalist, twitteratis, bloggers and social commentators

The Africa Practice Social Media Report provides other important data such as
1. A table showing the top most visited sites in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Egypt.
interestingly, all ten of the sites are social media sites. Nairaland.com made number 7.
2. A brief internet usage report which highlighted that 72% of internet users in Nigeria visited social networking sites in 2013, 55% email and 46% entertainment

3. A comparison between Facebook and mobile chat apps (Eskimi, 2go and Whatsapp). This section showed that the chat apps all have more active users than Facebook in Nigeria. It mentioned that the
apps perform well because they are cheaper alternatives to SMS and use less bandwidth and data.

4. A brief discussion on the Impact of Social Media in driving accountability, civic engagement, branding and its use as a source for journalists and audiences.

Its twitter ranking was obtained based on: original tweets, replies, retweets and mentions.

The Alder report did not feature or mention a category in which any of the stations i work for were included despite their huge online following where as the Africa Practice Social Media Report listed Cool FM for Synchronizing the radio and social media effortlessly along with Beat FM. The Alder report didn't include a category on which radio stations whether online or terrestrial were represented.

In my opinion, both reports provide different data but have convergence points.
1. The Alder report provides rankings in a number of categories which are missing from the Africa
Practice report such as:Banking, Consumer, Faith, Insurance, Non-profit, Sports and Telecoms

2. The Alder report also provides expert rankings for Brands, Individuals and Foundations based on
specific parameters such as customer service, consumer engagement, Relevant Information, Speed of
Response, Up-to-date information, Visual Delight

3. The Alder report for top brands also further provided a ranking for individuals synonymous with certain categories.

4. SocialMedia giants such as GTB, Etisalat, who are very active on Facebook as well as Twitter were
however nowhere to be found in the Africa Practice report. Single focus on Twitter should still  have produced such entities as outstanding but that wasn't the case.

In conclusion i think the Alder report is more conclusive and more reaching and encompassing and provides a greater sense and knowledge of the who-is-who in the Nigerian social media space. Its findings spread from individuals to governments to brands to faith-based organisations across Twitter, Facebook, Blogger, Wordpress etc and ranks them not just in terms of followership numbers but such things as customer service, up-to-date information and other hard-to-define parameters. The selected brands, organisations and individuals stood out regardless of their preferred social media.
In addition, the Alder report includes four more  volumes that break down categories further. See here.
The documents provide greater detail and more insight.

The Africa Practice report enlightens by providing numbers and tables and charts that inform about where Nigeria is in terms of mobile application users versus Facebook active users, a comparison between traditional journalism and the more modern forms like blogging, an Alexa ranking of top blogs and forums in Nigeria and other social media discussions. Its ranking efforts in my view are less reaching than the Alder report and also is limited to only Twitter and Blogs.

Abducted Girls: Nigerians Harangue FG On Twitter

Even as government steps up its efforts to rescue the school girls abducted by suspected Boko Haram gunmen, Nigerians have taken to Twitter to debunk reports that some of them have been rescued.
On Wednesday, Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima, announced an offer of N50 million to anyone who provides useful information which leads to the rescue of the abducted students.
“I want to make a pledge of N50 million for any information—relevant, credible information that will lead to the rescue of these innocent girls,” he said.
But on Thursday, there were several reports that the Nigerian Army lied in its claims about the abducted, most of whom were teenagers.
Following the reports, Nigerians took to Twitter to express their doubts.
"If the government has really rescued the girls, what are their parents looking for in the forest?" @hayaatedatty tweeted.
@yemiblaque, tweeted, "Families of girls kidnapped from Borno school by suspected Boko Haram militants are accusing the Nigerian military of lying."
A few even had their own 'released' statistics.
"Only 14 out of 129 abducted Nigerian school girls seized by suspected Boko Haram are now free," @faithbalmonte.
Simillarly, ‏@AugustineOgaba tweeted, "Only 30 girls have been released by Boko Haram."
The Army was accused of lying by a number of people.
One of them, ‏@abubaqr07, wrote, ""JTF told us that the kidnapped school girls were freed, while they still missing in unknown place by Boko haram."
"#NigerianArmy com out n defend your reports o #BBCAFRICA says only ten girls escaped from boko haram after Tuesday kidnapp," a doubting @Oceano_maliq tweeted.
Meanwhile, concerned parents are reportedly scouring the bush that is between Chibok and Damboa in search of their lost wards.

New leaked Apple iPhone 6 photos reveal production blueprints displaying 4.7 inch screen

They're not photo realistic images promising detailed insights into the look and feel of the heavily anticipated iPhone 6, but blueprints believed to be part of the creation process for Apple's newest flagship smartphone have surfaced online.
The pictures of the plans and moulds were posted on the Chinese networking site Weibo, and appear to detail the production methods and dimensions of a phablet sized iPhone.
Illustrating a device measuring 4.7in, thTelegraph reports that the images were sourced from a Foxconn factory in China. Critically, Foxconn has been confirmed as one of the companies employed by Apple to manufacture its iPhone range.
Taking a closer look at the plans, they reveal a device design remarkably similar to Apple's existing smartphone lineup. The chassis with its curved edge seems virtually identical to older models and includes the home button embedded with a fingerprint sensor.
The only crucial difference is the size itself. If Apple is indeed manufacturing a smartphone that's 0.7in larger than the current iPhone 5S, it would confirm months of rumour and speculation of a supersized offering. A recent report by Nikkei even claimed that the iPhone 6 will come not only in a 4.7in model, but a gargantuan 5.5in guise as well.
Customers who enjoy substituting their tea trays with smartphones will be pleased at the news, but for us 5.5in sounds a little unwieldly for a manufacturer famed for sleek, elegant designs (what do you think? Take our poll below and let us know.) Regardless, a larger display would encroach upon a space that has previously been dominated by Samsung's Galaxy range of phablet handsets.

About 80 students of the Government Girls’ Secondary School in Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State, abducted by the Boko Haram insurgents on Monday were reportedly rescued on Tuesday and Wednesday morning by a group of vigilante, local hunters and soldiers.
The joint security team pursued the insurgents in search of about 100 girls they abducted. It was gathered that the insurgents, who were carrying the school girls in Tipper Lories, got stuck in the bush while they were trying to crossover some muddy area between Chibok and Askira/Uba.
According to the father of one of the rescued girls Malam Ali Iliya, the girl said when the trailer got stuck, some of the girls jumped out and ran for their lives.

“They were scattered in the bush when the vigilante and local hunters found them. Some of them were wounded, some were with fracture, which I believe was as a result of jumping from the high vehicle, but we are happy that our children have been rescued.“Now we are praying for those who are still with the Boko Haram; our prayer is that every father will have his child back”, he said.
He added that his daughter Hajara was sound and healthy but weak stressing that “our children told us that when they started running, the insurgents didn’t shoot them.“They allowed those who could run to go but those who could not run either as a result of fear or wound are still with them in the bush. My daughter said the abductors were over one hundred and that the girls were 243; she said the insurgents asked them to count themselves”.

Russian Intelligence Claims MH370 Was ‘Hijacked And Presently in Afghanistan’, Passengers And Crew Alive

Russian intelligence sources have claimed that all passengers and crew members aboard the missing Malaysian Flight MH370 are alive and the plane was, in fact, hijacked and flown to Afghanistan.

A source in Russian’s FSB secret service has reportedly said that the plane was hijacked and flown close to the Afghan-Pakistan border and all people aboard the plane are currently being held hostage.

The intelligence source provided the data to a correspondent of a Russian newspaper, Moskovsky Komsomolets.

“Flight MH370 malaysia Airlines missing on 8 March with 239 passengers was hijacked. Pilots are not guilty; the plane was hijacked by unknown terrorists. We know that the name of the terrorist who gave instructions to pilots is “Hitch.” The plane is in Afghanistan not far from Kandahar near the border with Pakistan,” the source was quoted as saying.

The Russian newspaper has said that the passengers have been divided into seven groups and are living in mud huts with almost no food, according to Daily Star.

The report said that 20 passengers who were Asian have been smuggled into a bunker in Pakistan. It is also claimed that the terrorists are possibly seeking to bargain with either America or China.

The news, however, has not been confirmed by authorities either in Malaysia or China and must be taken with caution as there are no credible evidence to prove that this is what has happened. Also, the news cannot be independently verified due to the anonymity of the source to the Russian newspaper.

A massive search team, currently coordinated by Australia, is searching for the wreckage for more than a month and recent pings possibly emitted by the black box have been considered the best lead so far.

Angus Houston, the head of a joint agency has said that they were confident that the signals heard were from the missing plane.

“I’m now optimistic that we will find the aircraft, or what is left of the aircraft, in the not-too-distant future -but we haven’t found it yet, because this is a very challenging business,” Houston said on Thursday.
